Air Fryer Chicken Wings

Air Fryer Chicken Wings

Chicken wings in the air fryer are fantastic, and you’ll be making chicken a lot more often if you try them. The forced circulating hot air crisps the skin, which is difficult to achieve in a standard oven, and the center is perfectly cooked, tender, and juicy. The cook time for air-fried chicken wings is only 16 minutes (3 times faster than a traditional oven). Because there is no need to preheat an air fryer, this is the quickest crispy chicken wings recipe.

Which Air Fryer Is the Best?

Air fryers are classified into two types. The first type is a toaster oven with a small oven door, such as our Cuisinart model, my sister’s Farberware model, or this fancy one by Breville.

The second type is a slide-in drawer/basket model, such as those made by Phillips, Gourmia, or Nuwave. We prefer the Cuisinart toaster oven-style air fryer because it holds more food and performs more functions. It took the place of our old toaster oven because it can air fry, bake, broil, and toast.

How to Make Crispy Air Fryer Wings:

There are a few tips and tricks to making these wings, so grab a pen and paper to jot them down, or save time by using the printable recipe card at the bottom of this post. Before you begin, pat the chicken wings dry with paper towels.

Another tip for crispy air fryer wings is to add a little baking powder to the mixture. Baking powder contributes to crispy skin. You’ll fall in love with this air fryer chicken wings recipe and never want to eat them any other way.

INGREDIENTS

12 whole wings – once you’ve cut these up you’ll have 24 wings

favorite sauce – I love to make my own homemade sauce with a little cayenne pepper, butter, and hot sauce

garlic powder – adds a little additional flavor to the wings

olive oil – I always coat the wings in a little oil before adding any additional seasonings.

baking powder – helps create extra crispy skin on the finished hot wings.

salt – to taste

pepper – to taste

Air Fryer Chicken Wings Recipe:

  • If you have complete wings, divide them into drums and flats.
  • Check that they are defrosted.
  • Allow them to completely dry (this will help them get crispy).
  • In a mixing bowl, combine the wings, oil, garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, salt, and pepper. Toss to coat the wings completely.
  • You are free to substitute your favorite seasonings, but this is a basic traditional chicken wing seasoning blend (and delicious).
  • Preheat the Air Fryer for 2 minutes at 400°F.
  • Cook the wings in a single layer in the air fryer (they should not touch) for 10 minutes at 400 degrees F.
  • When the timer goes off, carefully open the chicken wings and flip them over.
  • Close the air fryer and cook for 8 minutes at 400 degrees F.
  • Serve the chicken wings alongside your favorite side dishes or dips!

Can I Double the Recipe?

It’s best to keep the wings in a single layer for all-around crispy chicken wings. You can double everything if you have a larger air fryer, such as our Cuisinart model. When doubling, air fry the wings for 18-22 minutes, or until the skin is crisp, flipping halfway through. The bake time will differ depending on the surface area of your air fryer basket.

Can I bake these in a standard oven?

It takes a lot longer to get crispy chicken wings in the oven. Preheat the oven to 400°F and bake the chicken wings for 45 minutes to an hour, or until crispy, flipping the wings after 30 minutes.

Serving Suggestions for Air Fryer Chicken Wings:

  • Serve with dips like Cilantro Lime Dip, Jalapeno Ranch, The Best Chunky Blue Cheese, or Homemade Buffalo Sauce.
  • Serve with corn on the cob – Instant Pot Corn on the Cob or Air Fryer Corn on the Cob is always popular!
  • Make Frozen French Fries or Tater Tots in the air fryer to serve alongside the wings!
  • A hearty scoop of Creamy Mac and Cheese pairs PERFECTLY with Chicken Wings!
  • Make a Simple Wedge Salad to accompany the wings!
  • One of my favorite side dishes is Air Fryer Sweet Potato Fries! Much healthier than the fried option!
  • Serve with celery and carrots and a side of Blue Cheese Dressing – DELICIOUS!

Is it possible to bake chicken wings?

Yes, but it takes a lot longer to get them crispy. Preheat the oven to 400°F and arrange the wings on a baking sheet in a single layer (place on an oven rack on top of the baking sheet to get crispier). Bake for 30 minutes, then flip and cook for another 15-30 minutes, depending on crispiness preference.

Disclaimer:

The Cosori Air Fryer was used to make this recipe. You may need to adjust your cooking time if you’re using a different air fryer. Smaller wings will cook more quickly than larger wings. These are the best air fryer chicken wings ever, and they’re so simple to make with only a few ingredients.
