How to Clean Your Carpet at Home
Maintaining your carpet is the first step to cleaning it. Regularly vacuum your carpet to protect it from dirt and grit that can damage its fibres and wear them out over time. You will find it more effective to vacuum both sides of the carpet rather than just the top.
Are you vacuuming your carpets correctly? Here are some steps you should follow:
Vacuum in one direction
Make sure you vacuum a row of carpet in one direction, wall-to-wall, instead of back and forth as you usually do. After vacuuming a row, pull the vacuum over the row you just vacuumed. By doing this, you will lay the carpet back down and pick up any dirt you missed on the first swipe.
Empty vacuum bag when it’s half-full
Do not reuse your bags after they are half-full. Using your vacuum to its full capacity may reduce its cleaning efficiency by more than 50%. Reusing disposable bags may also reduce cleaning efficiency.
Vacuum slowly
As well as vacuuming in one direction, vacuum slowly so that your machine can work up the carpet and pick up more dirt and dust. You will know if you are getting against the nap if its fibers stick up, or if it looks a little messy.
Don’t wait too long before vacuuming
Your carpet may not appear dirty, but that does not mean it is not dirty. Dirt and dust accumulate beneath its fibres before you notice them, so back to our first tip: vacuum frequently. We recommend you vacuum at least once or twice a week.
How to Maintain Your Carpe
Besides vacuuming frequently, here are some tips on how to take care of your carpets in between professional cleanings.
Remove indents and impression marks
You can prevent permanent stains on your carpet by rotating your furniture every now and then. If this happens, rub an ice cube over the affected area, fluff it up, and allow the area to fully dry.
Treat stains immediately
A successful carpet stain removal starts with getting to the stain as soon as possible. Blot carefully to avoid pushing the spill deeper into the carpet fibers.
Wash Well
You should have your carpets professionally cleaned at least every six months. Doing so will help you avoid the risks associated with DIY carpet and rug cleaning, particularly overwetting, which may cause the underlay dyes to seep through.
These tips may prove useful for cleaning your carpets at home. Remember, however, that these are only temporary solutions to maintain your carpets between professional cleanings.
